For Master Corporal Mane Yussuf Mohamed, serving in uniform is the fulfilment of a childhood dream and a lifelong commitment to her country. A member of the 11th Battalion of the Djiboutian National Defence Forces, she is currently deployed to Somalia under the African Union Support and Stabilisation Mission in Somalia, serving with the Djiboutian contingent in Sector 4, Beledweyne.
Having joined the military in 2016, Master Corporal Mane says patriotism was the driving force behind her decision.
“Being a soldier is a humble calling that I used to dream about from a young age. Patriotism inspired me to join the military to defend my country, my land, and to sacrifice for the protection of my people. I am truly proud and happy to serve here,” she says.
Celebrating Women’s Progress
As the world marks International Women’s Day on 8 March, Mane reflects on the remarkable strides women have made in society and within the armed forces.
“International Women’s Day is a great and important day that we cherish. Compared to the past, women have developed tremendously. Today, they work alongside their male colleagues in all sectors. They are doctors, pilots, and professionals in every field, capable of performing the same roles as men,” she says.
Master Corporal Mane’s experience in the military reinforces this belief. Working in a traditionally male-dominated profession has not limited her aspirations. Instead, this has strengthened her resolve.
Serving on the Frontlines of Peace
Since her deployment to Somalia on a peacekeeping mission, Mane has gained useful skills that have enhanced her performance and professionalism.
“I have gained invaluable skills that have boosted my performance. I play a vital role in ensuring the success of the mission,” she says.
Master Corporal Mane’s responsibilities are diverse and critical to mission success. She works alongside her male counterparts at checkpoints, scanning points, and gates. She also conducts searches on female passengers at the airport to prevent the transportation of prohibited items. In addition, Mane supports administrative functions, contributing to the daily operations of the mission.

Through these duties, she directly contributes to security and protection of mission personnel and civilians.
A Message of Courage and Determination
To women who aspire to join the military, Master Corporal Mane offers words of encouragement: “My message to fellow women who wish to join the military is to be brave and take the bold decision to serve their country and their people. Women are powerful agents of peace and security. Serving will strengthen your skills and resilience.”
