Djibouti’s Battalion 13 deploys to Somalia under AUSSOM

Beledweyne, March 16, 2026 – Newly deployed African Union Support and Stabilisation Mission in Somalia (AUSSOM) Djiboutian troops have arrived in Beledweyne and Bulo Burde.

The incoming 13th Battalion replaces the 11th Battalion, which has completed its tour of duty in Beledweyne, Dhusamareb, and Bulo Burde. Led by Col. Ahmed Aden Abdullahi, the 13th Battalion was received at Ugaas Khalif Airport by outgoing 11th Battalion Commander, Col. Mohamed Omar Said, alongside AUSSOM Djiboutian officers.

Col. Said welcomed the troops and emphasised the significance of public safety, peacebuilding, and collaboration with the Somali Security Forces (SSF).

“My advice to the incoming forces is to support the public and state institutions in securing key installations such as airports in Beledweyne, Bulo Burde, and Dhusamareb and to maintain the existing stability and peace for Somalia to move forward and develop,” said Col. Said.

The officers rotating out of Somalia were recognised for their contributions to peace support operations during their tour of duty, liberating several areas from Al-Shabaab in Hiiraan and Galmudug regions of central Somalia.

Col. Abdullahi affirmed the new battalion’s readiness to assume its responsibilities and continue supporting security efforts in close cooperation with the Somali people and the Federal Government of Somalia.

He encouraged the incoming troops to uphold the same commitment to supporting local communities demonstrated by the outgoing battalion.

“Today, we have taken over the mission from the 11th Battalion. We will continue working to ensure security and support the Somali people and the Government of Somalia. I urge the soldiers to diligently carry out their duties while maintaining discipline and focus,” said Col. Abdullahi.

After the handover, part of the 13th Battalion proceeded to Bulo Burde while the 11th Battalion returned to Djibouti.

Djibouti remains a key AUSSOM Troop Contributing Country, serving alongside personnel from Uganda, Ethiopia, Kenya, and Burundi.
