Jowhar, 8 March, 2026 – Africa Union Support and Stabilisation Mission in Somalia (AUSSOM) Sector 5 Commander, Col. Oscar Hatungimana, led mission personnel at Jowhar Airfield in marking International Women’s Day on Sunday.
Speaking during a colourful ceremony, Col. Hantungimana highlighted the importance of women’s rights, justice, and their role in peace and security.
“This year, we celebrate International Women’s Day under the theme Rights, Justice, Action for All Women and Girls. Promoting rights and justice creates a conducive environment for peace and security,” the Sector 5 Commander said.

He commended the female personnel of the Burundian National Defence Forces (BNDF) contingent serving under AUSSOM for their dedication and professionalism, reaffirming the contingent’s commitment to advancing women’s rights.
“I thank all female BNDF soldiers who are serving in AUSSOM for their commitment and dedication to the assignment and service to the mission,” added Col Hantungimana, and called on all security stakeholders to maintain heightened vigilance during the holy month of Ramadan.
AUSSOM BNDF Gender Officer, Major Alice Ngezebuhoro, emphasised the indispensable role of women in society and the workplace.

“The role of women in the fight for equality and justice is unparalleled. When women are adequately represented in decision-making bodies, they contribute greatly to building equality and justice for all,” Maj. Ngezebuhoro said.
She also praised the government of Burundi for enacting laws that protect women from human rights violations, encouraging women serving in the mission to execute their duties with diligence, wisdom, competence, and professionalism to fully realise their contribution to peace and security in Somalia.
The United Nations Support Office in Somalia (UNSOS) Regional Administrative Officer, Ms. Adja Sakho, highlighted the broader significance of International Women’s Day.

“We will never achieve lasting progress if we leave women and girls behind,” she added.
Ms. Sakho praised women serving with the BNDF contingent, noting that their participation in peacekeeping and field operations demonstrates courage, resilience, and integrity.
“They often work in challenging environments, yet they remain powerful examples of courage, resilience, and integrity. I admire their strength, teamwork, and patience,” she said.
The commemoration at Jowhar Airfield highlighted women’s growing recognition in Peace Support Operations and reaffirmed AUSSOM partners’ commitment to implement the Women Peace and Security Agenda in Somalia.
