We stand united to eliminate Al-Shabaab – AUSSOM Force Commander

Lower Shabelle, 6 March 2026 –The African Union Support and Stabilisation Mission in Somalia (AUSSOM) Force Commander, Lt. Gen. Sam Kavuma, has pledged the mission’s full commitment in its efforts to liberate Somalia from Al-Shabaab’s insurgency.

During a field visit to assess the combat readiness of frontline troops following the successful liberation of strategic Mubarak and Durasalaam towns in Lower Shabelle, Lt. Gen. Kavuma called on the Ugandan contingent serving under AUSSOM and the Somali National Armed Forces (SNAF) to uphold the highest standards of professionalism, morale, and discipline in fulfilment of the mandate.

Accompanied by Sector One Commander, Brig. Gen. Jackson Kayanja, the SNAF and international partners, the Force Commander commended the troops for their resilience and bravery in dislodging Al-Shabaab militants.

“Through sweat, struggle, and sacrifice, we stand united to eliminate Al-Shabaab and secure a future for our brothers and sisters in Somalia,” said Lt. Gen Kavuma, who praised Sector One command and troops for their meticulous planning and execution of the operations for Somalia’s lasting peace and stability.

Brig. Gen. Kayanja said troop morale remains high as forces prepare to consolidate their recent operational gains, praising the seamless cooperation between AUSSOM and SNAF troops in ensuring the mission’s long-term success.

Col. Owiny Akena, Battle Group 44 Commander and Operation Commander, said Mubarak and Durasalaam remain under the full control of the joint forces.

Lt. Sayidnuur Abdullah Warsame, representing SNAF, commended the AUSSOM troops for their unwavering support, highlighting the high level of professionalism and discipline exhibited by the Ugandan forces throughout the recent operations.

In a meeting with residents, the Force Commander thanked the local community for their warm reception and support to AUSSOM troops, urging them to embrace security and actively engage in socio-economic development.

“Without peace, security and stability, you cannot live. We are here so that you get peace. We are your friends and Al-shabaab is your enemy and has denied you peace,” said Lt. Gen. Kavuma Kavuma, adding that AUSSOM, in partnership with the Federal Government of Somalia (FGS) and other stakeholders, would provide essential relief support to the liberated communities.

The local community also thanked the joint forces for restoring peace and stability in the region.

“We have been suffering for long but ever since you arrived in the area, we are relieved,” said a resident.
