Courage Beyond Boundaries: 1CL Scholastique’s Journey in Uniform

In peacekeeping, courage isn’t just physical strength; it’s resilience, dedication, and commitment to serving others.

For 1CL Arajejumahoro Scholastique of the 15th Burundian Contingent serving under the African Union Support and Stabilisation Mission in Somalia (AUSSOM), wearing the uniform is both a privilege and a responsibility.

Scholastique has served in the Burundian National Defense Forces (BNDF) for six years, inspired by a strong sense of patriotism and desire to protect her homeland.

“It was a strong sense of patriotism that inspired me to join the military, driven by the desire to defend my country and protect its people. I found the army to be an inclusive institution, one that upholds fairness and provides equal opportunities without discrimination or gender bias,” she says.

For her, the military is not simply a career – it is a calling rooted in service, equality, and national pride.

Breaking Barriers in a Male-Dominated Field

Currently deployed in Somalia under AUSSOM, Scholastique serves in the Combat Engineering unit, one of the most demanding roles in military operations. Her responsibilities include detecting and neutralizing explosive devices along roads and supply routes, ensuring safe passage for fellow soldiers and civilians.

“Working in a male-dominated field has strengthened my confidence and proven to me that gender does not define one’s ability to serve and lead,” she says.

Her work directly contributes to operational success and civilian protection, highlighting the critical role women play in peace support missions.

Driven by Duty and Pride

Despite the challenges of deployment, distance from family, and high-risk tasks, Scholastique remains motivated by her sense of duty.

“My motivation comes from my deep sense of duty and commitment to serve my country and protect my people. Wearing the uniform is a source of pride and responsibility,” she says.

Her commitment exemplifies the growing presence and impact of women in uniform, who bring skill, courage, and determination to every mission.

A Symbol of Progress and Empowerment

As the world marks International Women’s Day on 8 March, Scholastique reflects on what the celebration means.

“International Women’s Day represents a significant milestone in the journey of women to reclaim their rights, dignity, and freedom. Today, women are increasingly recognised as equal partners with men, actively contributing to the socio-economic development and progress of our nation,” she says.

Scholastique’s words reflect a broader transformation within security institutions, where women are moving beyond traditional roles to take on frontline responsibilities.

Inspiring the Next Generation

To young women considering a military career, Scholastique offers a message of empowerment and confidence.

“I encourage all women who aspire to join the military to be confident and courageous. The uniform represents honor, responsibility, and service,” she says.

Through her dedication and service, Scholastique stands as a powerful example that leadership, bravery, and professionalism transcend gender. Her story is not only one of personal achievement but also of progress, reflecting the evolving role of women in peacekeeping and national defense.
