AUSSOM, SNAF destroy Al-Shabaab hideouts in Lower Shabelle

Mogadishu, 10 April 2026 – African Union Support and Stabilisation Mission in Somalia (AUSSOM) troops, in coordination with the Somali National Armed Forces (SNAF) and international partners, today launched a targeted offensive against insurgent hideouts in Buulo Abdala and Madulo areas in Lower Shabelle region.

AUSSOM and SNAF ground forces, supported by air cover, identified and destroyed enemy positions, killing several Al-Shabaab insurgents while others fled under sustained pressure.

The forces also recovered weapons and equipment from the militants during the operation, significantly weakening the insurgents’ ability to regroup.

The troops later cleared and secured the liberated areas to deny Al-Shabaab access to their previously occupied areas used to launch attacks against civilians and security personnel.

The AUSSOM Uganda Contingent Commander Brig. Gen. Jackson Kayanja commended residents of Mubarak, Marere, and Darussalam areas for their cooperation and support in securing the region.

Shuaib Osman, a local leader from Awadhglee, praised the partnership between the security forces and the community.

“We thank UPDF, SNAF, and partners for restoring peace. The community stands ready to continue supporting lasting security,” said Osman.

The operation was commanded by Col. Owinyi Akena, who ensured coordination among ground forces, air assets, SNAF, and international partners.

“Integrating air and ground forces remains effective against the insurgents. This success highlights our joint operations with SNAF and support from international partners,” said Col. Akena.

The joint forces reaffirmed their commitment to continue operations against Al-Shabaab and work with local communities to restore peace and security in the region.
