Jowhar, 07 April 2026 – African Union Support and Stabilisation Mission in Somalia (AUSSOM) troops in Jowhar held a medical camp for Hirshabelle communities today to strengthen engagement through humanitarian efforts.
The medical outreach at Jowhar Airfield served residents from the Towfik Internally Displaced Persons (IDP) camp and surrounding villages.

AUSSOM Burundian medical personnel at the Level 1 hospital treated at least 20 patients, including women, children, and elderly individuals with various health conditions, reflecting the Mission’s commitment to supporting communities, particularly those with limited access to healthcare.
Capt. Dr. Onesime Nsavyumukama, the Medical Chief for Sector 5, emphasised the importance of the outreach in addressing the community’s urgent medical needs.

“The purpose of this outreach is to help the families [who] are not able to go in consultation by [doctors] because they don’t have enough money,” Capt. Dr. Nsavyumukama said.
“Each day, we receive 20 patients, including elderly individuals, children, and women, all of whom are vulnerable. We treat many cases, including infections, malnutrition, high blood pressure, and others.”
He encouraged the public to seek medical attention early to prevent complications and improve recovery.

The outreach, which also focused on preventive healthcare, further strengthened Civil-Military Cooperation (CIMIC), building trust and collaboration between AUSSOM and the local community.
“Our medical help builds the relationship between our military and the local community [in the form] of CIMIC, and we give them our help,” said Capt. Dr. Nsavyumukama.
Beneficiaries thanked AUSSOM for the support.
Shukri Ibrahim Mohamed, a mother of four from Towfik IDP camp, shared her experience after seeking treatment for her child.

“We were received well by the doctors. My child received good treatment. The Burundian medical team regularly supports the community whenever needed, and I am grateful for their unwavering assistance,” said Mohamed.
As AUSSOM continues its mission in Somalia, these humanitarian initiatives highlight its dual role in promoting security and supporting community well-being.
The medical outreach in Jowhar demonstrates AUSSOM’s ongoing efforts to improve lives and assist vulnerable populations in Middle Shabelle.
