AUSSOM Police lead training programme for Somali Police instructors to strengthen security sector capacity

Mogadishu, Somalia – Somalia’s Minister of Internal Security, Abdullahi Sheikh Ismail, today launched a training programme for instructors of the Somali Police Force (SPF) in Mogadishu, aimed at strengthening institutional capacity and supporting ongoing stabilisation efforts within Somalia’s security sector.

Funded by the Government of Japan, the 10-day training is being conducted by the African Union Support and Stabilisation Mission in Somalia (AUSSOM) Police at the General Kaahiye Police Training Academy as part of joint efforts to enhance the professionalism, instructional capacity, and operational effectiveness of the SPF.

The programme is designed to strengthen the knowledge and competencies of police instructors and officers, improve the quality of police training, enhance service delivery, and reinforce public safety across the country.

Participants will receive advanced training and practical skills intended to support the standardisation and continuous improvement of police training nationwide. The initiative is also expected to be progressively expanded to regional and district police units to strengthen professionalism and institutional capacity at all levels of the police structure.

The launch ceremony was attended by the Acting Head of AUSSOM and Deputy Special Representative of the Chairperson of the African Union Commission (DSRCC), Ambassador Mouktar Osman Karie; Gen. Mohamed Mohamud Mohamed (Garare); and AUSSOM Police Commissioner, AIGP Hillary Sao Kanu, alongside senior officials from the SPF and AUSSOM.

Also present were the Japan Project Coordinator at the Ministry of Internal Security and AUSSOM, Abdicaziz Abdirahman Yusuf; AUSSOM Police Coordinator, ACP Dr. Samuel Asiedu Okanta; the SPF Head of Planning and Training, Lt. Col. Ahmed Mohamed Mohamed; and General Kaahiye Police Training Academy Commandant, Gen. Mukhtar Gaabow Hassan.

Officials attending the ceremony welcomed the launch of the programme, noting its importance in enhancing policing standards, strengthening professional competencies, and improving institutional effectiveness within Somalia’s security sector.

The initiative reflects continued cooperation among the Government of Japan, the African Union, and the Federal Government of Somalia in support of peacebuilding, stabilisation, and the development of effective security institutions in Somalia.
