PRESS RELEASE
(For Immediate release)
AUSSOM PR/07/2026
Today, we join the people and Government of the Federal Republic of Somalia (FGS), together with millions of Africans across the continent and in the diaspora, in commemorating Africa Day, a historic occasion that celebrates African unity, solidarity, and our shared aspirations for peace, stability, and prosperity.
Africa Day holds special significance for Somalia and the African Union (AU) family. For nearly two decades, African nations have stood shoulder to shoulder with the Somali people in support of their journey toward peace, stabilization, state-building, and recovery. Somalia’s progress and resilience remain a testament to the strength of African solidarity and collective action.
As we commemorate this important day, we recognise the sacrifices made by Somali security forces, the people of Somalia, and AU personnel who have worked tirelessly to restore peace and stability across the country. Their courage and commitment continue to inspire hope for a secure and prosperous Somalia.
AUSSOM, working in close partnership with the FGS, remains committed to supporting Somali-led efforts to strengthen security institutions, promote stabilisation, protect communities, and create conditions for sustainable peace and development.
Africa Day also provides an opportunity to celebrate Somalia’s rich history, culture, and contribution to the African continent. Somalia embodies the resilience, determination, and entrepreneurial spirit that define Africa’s future. Despite ongoing challenges, the Somali people continue to demonstrate remarkable resolve in rebuilding their nation and advancing reconciliation and development.
As Africa advances the aspirations of Agenda 2063, Somalia remains central to the continent’s vision of “The Africa We Want” – an Africa that is peaceful, integrated, secure, and driven by its own citizens.
On this occasion, I pay tribute to the Troop- and Police-Contributing Countries serving under AUSSOM, whose sons and daughters continue to make sacrifices in pursuit of peace and stability in Somalia. I also commend our international and regional partners for their continued support to Somalia’s stabilisation journey.
Let us use this Africa Day to renew our shared commitment to unity, cooperation, and collective responsibility in addressing the challenges facing our continent. Together, Africans can continue building a future founded on peace, dignity, opportunity, and hope.
To the people of Somalia and all Africans around the world, I wish you a meaningful and inspiring Africa Day.
Happy Africa Day 2026.
H.E. Amb. El Hadji Ibrahima Diene
Special Representative of the Chairperson of the African Union Commission (SRCC) and Head of AUSSOM
